Gulf Shores has historical sights for visitors to explore and plenty of recreational opportunities including boating, fishing, swimming and parasailing. Gulf Shores has been a popular tourist destination since 1933 when the Intercoastal Waterway connected it to the mainland.
Bon Secour National Wildlife Refuge is located on coastal land with geographical features from sand dunes to woodlands. Bon Secour has become a wildlife habitat for migratory birds, nesting sea turtles and the endangered Alabama beach mouse. Over 370 species of birds have been recorded during the migratory season.
Bon Secour National Wildlife Refuge is one of the largest undeveloped parcels of land on the coast of Alabama. Nature and hiking trails are available.

Fort Morgan has had a long military history, although it is best known for its role in the Battle of Mobile Bay during the Civil War. The fort was started in 1819 and completed in 1834. It became the biggest military base in Alabama during World War I when it was used for training heavy artillery crews to serve in France. After World War I Fort Morgan was deactivated and eventually turned over to the State of Alabama.
