DeSoto Caverns was named for Hernando de Soto who discovered the cave in the 1500s, the cave was also used as a military base by the Indian Chieftain Tuscaloosa and his tribe of Coosa warriors. During the Civil War, DeSoto Caverns became a gunpowder mining center. The caverns were also used as a speakeasy and square dance hall during Prohibition
