The state of Alabama (from the Choctaw word alibamu, "clearing of the bush") lies in the south-eastern United States, extending into three great natural regions. In the north and east the landscape is patterned by the southern outliers of the Appalachians and part of the Cumberland and Piedmont Plateaux. The north-west of the state is occupied by the North-West Plateau in the central lowlands.
