Afyon - Ulu Cami

Situated in the upper part of the Old Town, Afyon's Great Mosque (1272) with its plain exterior is one of the early Seljuk "forest mosques", so-called on account of their numerous columns. In this particular case, as many as 40 wooden pillars topped by stalactitic capitals support the decorated timber beams, thatch matting and thick layer of clay making up the flat roof of the nine-aisle prayer hall. The ceiling above the center aisle is slightly raised and the white marble mihrab has a gilded calligraphic border. The main portal of the mosque is decorated with Seljuk wicker design.
