Acapulco - Beaches
There are more than 20 beaches in or close to Acapulco. Caleta and Caletilla, both very popular with the Mexicans especially in the mornings, are known for their calm waters and fascinating submarine life (glass bottom boats). From Playa Caletilla boats make the short crossing to the island of La Roqueta where the beach of the same name has been transformed into a most attractive nature reserve. Visible in the water just to the north-east of the island (in a depth of about 2m (6.5ft) stands the 'Virgin Submarina', a bronze statue of the Virgin of Guadalupe. Playa Hornos and Playa Hornitos are particular afternoon favourites, as too is Playa Condesa to the east (the latter, being especially fashionable at the moment, is lively in the evenings as well). The calm waters of the delightful bay near the fishing village of Puerto Marqués, 13km/8mi east of Acapulco, usually attract a morning crowd to the beach (likewise called Puerto Marqués). The lovely Revolcadero beach is less crowded but, being open to the Pacific, the surf tends to be heavy and the currents strong. Surfing competitions are held there every year. About 12km/7.5mi north-west of Acapulco is a little place called Pie de la Cuesta, situated on a sandy spit between the beach (heavy surf and currents) and the freshwater Laguna de Coyuca. At sunset the dunes offer a superb panorama, while the lights of Acapulco make an equally impressive sight at night. The Laguna de Coyuca is a natural Eden, with dense tropical vegetation, freshwater fish and exotic birds. There are boat trips on the lagoon from Pie de la Cuesta. There are other beaches deserving of mention, including La Angosta, Honda, Manzanillo, Redonda and Icacos.
