Abrantes - Castelo

Above Abrantes are the remains of the once mighty Castelo, built by King Dinis in 1301. It was destroyed by an earthquake in 1533 and finally demolished in 1807 by French troops under Marshal Junot, whom Napoleon created Duke of Abrantes. A visit to the castle is worthwhile because of the magnificent view over Abrantes and the Tagus valley.
