Abergavenny - Raglan Castle

About 8mi/13km east of Abergavenny is imposing Raglan Castle. Originally Norman, but extensively renovated in the 15th century, it is the last surviving medieval fortress in Wales. The hexagonal tower is Norman and offers marvelous views. Towards the end of the 15th century famous representatives of Welsh poetry and song met at the castle. In 1646 the Marquis of Worcester defended the castle, in which Charles I found refuge, against Fairfax. A little later Cromwell had it torn down.
Some features of the Great Tower are more typical of the architecture in Northern France. A Raglan exhibition is situated in the Closet Tower.
