Matsqui-Sumas-Abbotsford Museum

The Matsqui-Sumas-Abbotsford Museum, housed in Trethewey House, 2313 Ware Street, which was built in 1919 and has recently been lovingly restored, is rather out of the ordinary. It offers the opportunity to study exhibits of items used by the Red Indians who originally inhabited the country as well as memorabilia from the pioneering period. Particularly interesting at the Matsqui-Sumas-Abbotsford Museum are the documents about Sumas Lake, which was drained in 1924, thus producing 12,140 ha (30,000 acres) of fertile grazing and farmland which lie almost one meter below sea level and are protected by means of a dyke from the risk of being flooded by the Fraser River.
